About Frances Clark

Frances Clark's life and career influenced the entire field of piano-teacher-training in the last half of the twentieth century. The fresh, new philosophy of teaching that formed the basis of the piano pedagogy programs she initiated at Kalamazoo College (MI) and later transplanted to Westminster Choir College and The New School for Music Study (Princeton, NJ), was the result of her distinguished lifetime career as a pioneering music educator.

Her success ranged from the absolute beginner to the most accomplished artist, from the beginning teacher to the most distinguished university department head. She proved over and over again that her methods could be taught to others, thus expanding the field of professionally trained teachers who could open the world of music making to children and adults nationwide.

It is this methodology and philosophy that directs the work of the Frances Clark Center. The Board of Trustees includes educators who studied with Dr. Clark and worked closely with her through the years, as well as other prominent teachers, pianists, researchers, and civic leaders. It is the purpose of the Center to insure the ongoing influence of her philosophy, as well as to develop, test and disseminate new applications of her work through its research, seminars, workshops and conferences.

"My goal as a teacher is to create a climate in which my students experience continual musical, intellectual, and personal growth and to become increasingly dispensable to them in the process." — Frances Clark
